Re: Closing down... opening up

'Bosu Body Bar' is opening in the unit a couple of doors down from Hickson & Blacks, which used to be some sort of independent bank. They seem to be kitting it out quite nicely, and are going to sell healthy meals. On a more general note, the precinct is starting to actually look presentable. Lo...

Re: Building query...

Another one.

Noticed today when walking past a grey building on the end of the row of shops that includes Jasmine Cafe and Chorlton Eatery which is now a dentist. Looks very much like it may have at one point been a pub. Any ideas?

Re: Closing down... opening up

The army and navy supplies shop's gone as quick as it arrived. Mustn't be too much money in thermal socks.

Re: Building query...

Turning left onto Brantingham Road after Sher Akbar, then left again after the weird caravan site which i assume was a petrol station at some point, the huge building there, now flats, probably houses at some point. Come to think of it, some history of that corner unit which hosts the caravans would...

Re: Closing down... opening up

The two houses between Tesco and Sher Akbar actually look like they're being done up.

Does anyone know why these have lay dormant for so long?

Building query...

Dull thread, but i've often wondered when passing if the flats, next to the garage, opposite the retirement home, formerly the cartoon studios at the Unicorn end of Albany Road has ever been anything else? Just going off the building itself it looks like it could have possibly been a pub at some poi...

Re: Closing down... opening up

The horrible, bare off-licence next to De Nada has been completely stripped out quite quickly. Any word on whether it's just a refit or will be turning into something else? Also saw some people checking out the unit that was 1847. Hopefully that row will get a bit of a new lease of life, what with t...

Re: Anyone else tried Chorlton's new wine bar yet?

I could easily envisage a place like Font Bar or somewhere else which sells quality alcohol, serves food and is hugely popular on the weekends turning over tens of thousands of pounds per week. £30k a week would work out at just over £4k a day. It's not a huge amount of money when you consider that ...

Re: Anyone else tried Chorlton's new wine bar yet?

I remember having a conversation with somebody who had worked in some of the better bars locally, and they mentioned in passing that it wasn't unusual for them to turn over £30k+ per week. I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that, given their footfall, even despite lower prices, the Sedge Lyn...

Re: Anyone else tried Chorlton's new wine bar yet?

I eat out around Chorlton several times a week, not because i'm particularly flush but due to bone-idleness. I prefer not to drink in Wetherspoons, but mainly because of the clientele. Not being judgemental of them, i just tend to bump into people in there who i don't wish to socialise with - people...

Re: Chorlton's high street gets stranger by the day

It definitely hasn't happened that quickly. Chorlton's been known, rightly or wrongly, as quite a bohemian place for decades, mainly because it's always been a relatively liberal area with a large student population. I've lived nearby all my life and always remember it being known for its shops, veg...

Re: Closing down... opening up

The NIMBYs to one side, a Tesco wouldn't be welcomed on Beech Road because it might actually, y'know, attract customers and sell stuff regularly, rather than just the odd £40 scarf or recycled cushion. Bar weekend lunchtimes Beech Road's dead, and with good reason, the shops are shit, as are all bar...

Re: Closing down... opening up

I'm no Tesco basher, but i believe the government subsidise the wages of their employees, along with other companies like McDonalds and most low-paid staff for the very biggest employers. There's no doubt at at all that the Barlow Moor Road Tesco employs more people than the Feathers pub, anyone who...
