I'd be remiss not to offer my friend's details: Elly the Plumber, Chorlton based, 07961 888 535

I'd vouch for Elly's work. She's done a lot of stuff for me at a good price. I'm not sure she does heating though but best to check.

Thanks for answering but I'm moving soon and need someone to check the boiler out etc. Do you know if she, or anyone else you know, does this?

Try Rick Adderley on 07778 506437. He is Gas Safe registered and has done lots of work for me and some friends, including certifying boilers.

Whoever you use make sure they are on the Gas safe register http://www.gassaferegister.co.uk

I have previously used Ross Helsby (07726796672) and would recommend him. Sher and sons are good too but often not available that quickly

The guy who came to fit my boiler was Gas Safe and a complete numpty.

Sitting an exam means that they've sat an exam. It doesn't mean they are good. Reputation is everything.

Um, I didn't say you should use someone just because they were Gas Safe registered, rather that who you use should be registered. It's quite different.

How do you know that this person was a 'numpty' ?

The guy I had:
1) adapted a 15mm gas pipe to 22mm
2) didn't seal my outdoor flue pipe
3) did shoddy pipework
4) didn't fit thermostatic valves on the rads.

Gas Safe = NOTHING

Thanks to all for this thread - my boiler keeps losing pressure for no apparent reason - can't spot a leak. So I think I shall try Ross out.

With two of you recommending Ross I have booked him to come and give me a quote tomorrow.

He doesn't charge for quoting, is based in Chorlton, and says he charges £30 for the first half hour and £10 per half hour thereafter (and there is no VAT on top of that). Sounds good to me :)

After he has been tomorrow I will post again to let you know how it went....

Probably bad form to reply to myself, but hey....

Ross was very good. Professional, efficient and seemed to know his stuff. It was only a small job, and I am thinking of testing his skills further with a toilet installation in my under-stairs cupboard, but so far I am impressed with him.

:)

Sorry to re-ignite an old thread but after the recommendation on here we had Ross Helsby round to fix our heating, he answered promptly, worked quickly and was courteous and polite. Did a good job and would definitely recommend.
