Pond Life
The UK Government has listed ponds as UK Bio-diversity Action Plan Priority habitats,in need of urgent action.
Manchester Leisure is a major contributor to Manchester City Councils Bio-diversity action plan.
What was once a water-logged area has now been developed into a wildlife haven, by removing a layer of grass/soil a natural collection of water became the start of this educational resource. Along with some log-piles, many different marginal plants have been introduced, such as, wild sedge, flag iris, marsh marigold and watermint, not only do these look great, they encourage many different insects and butterflies to the ponds edge and into the pond.
If you look carefully at the water you may see pond life such as water-boatman, pond skaters and water-snails. These creatures are just a few of the ponds many inhabitants and visitors.
To find out more, why not contact the park warden, at the park
office who offer a variety of environmental
education activities such as pond-life identification and mini beast
hunts. Tel: Chorlton Park on 0161 881 9014.
